A Very Fine Late 17th Century Lancashire Side Chair

Standing on bold well-turned legs, joined by a similarly turned front stretcher, with plain side and back stretchers. The seat, formed from a single oak board, is set in a moulded frame.

The tall back has a raised panel carved with a central flower with stamped decoration within the petals, flanked by flamboyant stylised oak leaves. Note the very well-defined integral pyramid finials on the uprights.

The rare and unusual aspect of the chair is the extraordinarily tall crest, which measures 9.5 inches from top to bottom (the norm being around 7.5 inches).

Possibly made for a slightly larger customer, the chair bears the original owner’s initials, ‘ICR’ (remembering that at this date, ‘I’ would have been the same as our ‘J’), on the middle rail.

Tremendous rich burnished colour and surface.
